The Widener University Cheerleading team is an integral part of the Pride Experience.

The team cheers for all home football and men's basketball games, and we make campus and community appearances as requested. We compete on a national level at UCA College Nationals as well as perform exhibitions at local competitions. Prior to the start of the school year, the team attends UCA cheer camp in August (8/6/2020-8/9/2020) at the University of Scranton. Following camp, the team will begin preseason practices. For the fall semester, the team practices 3 times per week, attends conditioning and attends tumbling class once every two weeks. During the spring semester, the team continues with a modified practice schedule and cheers at the men's basketball games. Team members are expected to cheer all games and attend any practices that may occur over school breaks (thanksgiving break, winter holiday break, etc) and are asked to plan any family commitments or vacations around these dates.

The minimum criteria to make the team is as follows:

  • Standing tumbling: Tuck
  • Running tumbling: Round-off handspring through to at least tuck.
  • Single leg stunts, twisting stunts (i.e. full-ups, full-arounds, 1 & 1/2 ups and double ups), basket tosses, front flip cradle dismounts, strong body awareness, good flexibility for top girls and good strength/power for bases and backs.
  • Versatility in stunting (i.e. bases who both main & side, tops who can also base) is preferred and will result in a higher score.
  • Ability to learn game-day material quickly and execute it well (clean motions, strong showmanship, etc).
  • Clean-cut, collegiate image; good strength and overall fitness.

If you can not execute one skill, you are still encouraged to try out. Candidates who are exceptionally strong in one area may score high enough to make the team since all areas of the score sheet have equal value.

Please note, incoming freshman who do not have experience with certain college level requirements are encouraged to attend a prep clinic to learn.

The team is currently all girl and made up of 24 team members. The number of team members varies from year to year and may be anywhere from 20 to 30 depending on the number of qualified candidates at try-outs. Please note, that we can only compete 20 girls and therefore, those who do not score in the top 20 can still make the team and will be considered an alternate for competition purposes.

Unfortunately, at division 3 we can not offer athletic scholarships, but other scholarship opportunities might be available through the financial aid office.
